2024 NBA All-Star Snubs: Butler, Harden, and Others Left Out

Jimmy Butler, James Harden, Trae Young, Delon Fox and Domantas Sabonis were among the stars left off the coveted 2024 NBA All-Star Reserve Team. While the limited number of spots (14 per league) will inevitably lead to a cold streak, there were several factors that went into the coaches' voting decision.

Butler's situation

Despite Butler's undoubted talent and impressive playoff performance, his limited regular season appearances (33) played a large role in his fall from grace. While his averages (21.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists) were respectable, they didn't stand out compared to the other All-Star selections.

By contrast, his teammate Bam Adebayo played in 38 games and had arguably better numbers (20.6 points, 10.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists), but earned a reserve spot. Adebayo's Defensive Player of the Year candidacy and the Miami Heat's middle-of-the-pack Eastern Conference ranking (tied for 7th) compound Butler's situation, making it difficult for coaches to justify multiple Heat All-Star selections.

Compare that to the Eastern Conference bench:

Comparing Butler to the rest of the Eastern Conference bench further weakens his argument. Jalen Brunson, Donovan Mitchell, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, Julius Randle, and Paul Bancero all played more games, put up comparable or better numbers, and for the most part, the teams they were on performed better.

Cold feet or strategic move?

While Butler's absence may disappoint fans, it also reflects the reality of limited All-Star spots and an emphasis on regular season performance. Unless the league expands the roster, players like Butler who play for middle-of-the-pack teams could face a similar cold shoulder in the future.

However, Butler has already led the Heat to the Finals, suggesting he may use that as motivation to make another deep playoff run. At the end of the day, the true measure of success is on the court, and Butler has a chance to prove his doubters wrong once again.
