Ricky Rubio, a veteran point guard known for his energetic play and leadership, has announced his retirement from the NBA after 12 seasons. The 33-year-old Spaniard made the difficult decision following a season away from the Cleveland Cavaliers to prioritize his mental health.

Rubio, who has also enjoyed a decorated international career with Spain, acknowledged his recent struggles but emphasized progress: "I'm doing much better and getting better every day."

His retirement comes after a buyout agreement with the Cavs, alleviating some of their salary burden. Rubio's torn knee ligament in 2021 dealt a personal blow and set back the Cavaliers' resurgence after two 19-win seasons.

He played only 33 games last year, his explosiveness diminished by the injury. This season, he chose not to attend training camp, revealing on social media that "July 30th was one of the toughest nights of my life."

"My mind went to a dark place," Rubio wrote. "I decided to stop my professional career."

He expressed his future hope to share his experiences and "support others going through similar situations." However, he prefers privacy for now, focusing on his ongoing mental health journey and respecting his family.

He rose to prominence on the international stage as a teenage prodigy, winning Olympic medals in 2008 and 2012 and earning the FIBA World Cup MVP title in 2019. Drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2009, he played for them seven seasons before stints in Utah and Cleveland.

Rubio expressed gratitude to his teams, particularly the Cavs' Koby Altman and J.B. Bickerstaff: "My last home," he said. "You have an amazing organization, with Koby and JB, who have been extremely respectful and understanding of my situation."
